BackgroundBioinformatics skills are in short supply globally and have been identified as critical to the success of the South African government's Biotechnology strategy. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has recognized the need to support human capital and skills development initiatives for the growing bio-economy. The DST has therefore provided the principles for new strategic approach for bioinformatics and functional genomics support and development. Support is for Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral research with particular emphasis on South African Biotechnology themes. Objectives
- To establish a pool of highly skilled postgraduate students who are equipped to support the South African biotechnology arena;
- To generate bioinformatics solutions and knowledge relevant to the South African biotechnology industry; and
- To promote collaborations between academia and industry, and to strengthen inter-institutional partnerships.
