Nanotechnology Flagships Project


The Nanotechnology Flagships Project (NFP) seeks to promote nanotechnology research to ensure that South Africa is ready to optimally use nanotechnology to enhance our nation’s global competitiveness and sustainable economic growth. It aims to demonstrate the benefits of nanotechnology and its impact on some of the key challenges facing South Africa.  



The objectives of the NFP are to: 

  • Ensure the development of human resource capacity that focuses on Historically Disadvantaged Institutions (HDIs), women and people with disabilities; 
  • Accelerate national efforts in order to build excellence in research and development capacity;
  • Attract and retain young scientists and professionals of the highest calibre;
  • Support young scientists and professionals in basic and applied research;
  • Promote and stimulate innovation in the form of proof of concept and/or patents; and
  • Create transparency, public awareness and acceptance of nanotechnology.

Eligibility Criteria

Individual researchers who:

  • Hold a doctoral degree and are full-time employees or on a full-time fixed term-appointment (for at least the duration of the funding period of the project) at the following research institutions:
    • South African public universities; and
    • Public research entities such as Science Councils, National Research Facilities (NF), research laboratories, including research hospitals and museums; and
  • Have a proven track record in nanotechnology based research.
