AIMS Research Centre

Background

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), based in Cape Town, provides training in Mathematics in Biology, Mathematics in Finance, Astrophysics and Cosmology. These strategic areas urgently need development in South Africa as part of the national priorities.  The AIMS sets out to inspire choices at schools and universities in order to empower the people of the African continent in order to access careers that require a background in mathematics.

 

Target groups

The following targets are critical to build the required skills:

  • 60% South African postgraduate students
  • 30% African students
  • 10% foreign students
  • 45% females,
  • 55% Blacks
 

Objectives

  • To inspire school learners to pursue excellence in mathematics,
  • To focus on professionals seeking to upgrade their skills in order to become more effective teachers and researchers.
  • To promote mathematics and science in Africa,
  • To build capacity for African initiatives in education, research and technology.
