The Innovation Bursary Scheme is designed to provide financial support to students studying towards Honours, Masters, and Doctoral in innovation areas of national importance. This commitment is aligned to DST’s Grand Challenges and Science and Technology Missions aiming to broaden the frontiers of knowledge in innovation areas and to build the PhD pipeline for a knowledge-based economy.
In the allocation of bursaries, the target is to support a significant number of previously disadvantaged individuals.

- To increase student enrolment at Honours and Masters level, and thus increase the number of eligible entrants into postgraduate research studies (Masters, PhD and Postdoctoral fellows);
- To address skills shortages in the fields of SET by increasing the workforce that has postgraduate degrees in SET; and
- To increase the chances of retaining suitably qualified young women and black scientists, increasing the pool of researchers and knowledge workers in the NSI from which academic staff at higher education institutions can be recruited.
